7 Trending Interior Design Interview Questions — 2026
1. What interior design trends are currently trending in 2026, and which ones do you think will last long-term?
At JN Interiors, having worked in the industry for over three decades, we have seen design trends evolve significantly. In 2026, interiors are moving towards spaces that feel warmer, more personal and more connected to the people living in them.
We are seeing strong interest in natural materials, warm neutral palettes, textured finishes, organic forms, layered lighting and personalised spaces. Homes are becoming less about following one fixed style and more about creating an environment that reflects the lifestyle and personality of the homeowner.
However, experience has taught us that trends come and go. The design principles that last are good space planning, quality materials, functionality, proportion and timeless aesthetics. At JN Interiors, we believe trends should inspire a design, but they should not completely define it.
2. Is minimalism still trending, or is “warm minimalism” replacing it? Explain the difference.
Minimalism is still relevant, but it has evolved into something warmer and more comfortable.
Traditional minimalism often focused on clean lines, limited colours and reducing visual elements. Warm minimalism maintains simplicity but introduces natural materials, textures, warm colours, soft lighting and elements that bring personality into the space.
At JN Interiors, we believe a home should feel calm without feeling empty. We use warm woods, neutral tones, textured fabrics and layered lighting to create interiors that are clean and contemporary while still feeling comfortable and welcoming.
3. How are AI tools changing the interior design industry? Where should AI be used, and where is a designer’s expertise still essential?
AI is changing the way designers explore ideas and communicate concepts. It can be particularly useful for visualisation, inspiration, experimenting with different styles and helping clients understand possibilities at an early stage.
At JN Interiors, we see technology and AI as tools that can enhance the design process. However, interior design goes far beyond creating attractive visuals. A real project requires an understanding of space, materials, measurements, client lifestyle, budgets, technical detailing and on-site execution.
AI can help generate ideas, but it cannot visit a site, understand the exact challenges of a space or make practical decisions based on real-world execution. We believe the future will be a combination of technology and human expertise.
4. What sustainable materials or eco-friendly practices would you recommend for a modern Indian home?
We believe sustainability begins with making thoughtful and long-lasting design decisions.
For a modern Indian home, we recommend using durable materials, locally sourced products where possible, low-VOC paints and finishes, natural materials such as wood, stone, cane and terracotta, and products that are designed to last.
However, sustainability is not only about selecting environmentally friendly materials. It is also about avoiding unnecessary replacement and waste. At JN Interiors, we believe good planning and quality execution contribute significantly to sustainability.
5. What are the latest trends in modular kitchens, and how would you balance aesthetics with heavy Indian cooking requirements?
Modular kitchens today are becoming increasingly personalised. We are seeing clean designs, concealed storage, tall units, organised internal accessories, integrated appliances and warmer material palettes.
However, in an Indian home, functionality is just as important as aesthetics. Indian cooking involves regular use of heat, oil, spices and multiple utensils, so the kitchen needs to be designed around the actual lifestyle of the family.
At JN Interiors, we carefully consider storage, ventilation, countertop materials, cabinet finishes, hardware and workflow while planning a kitchen. A beautiful kitchen should not be difficult to maintain.
6. How would you use lighting to make the same room work for different moods — work, relaxation and entertaining?
Lighting has the ability to completely transform the mood and functionality of a space.
At JN Interiors, we prefer layered lighting rather than relying on one central light source. For work and daily activities, functional lighting is essential. For relaxation, softer ambient lighting helps create a calm and comfortable environment. For entertaining, decorative and accent lighting can add character and highlight different areas of the room.
We typically combine ambient, task and accent lighting to create flexibility within a space. Multiple circuits and dimmable lighting can also allow homeowners to change the atmosphere depending on the time of day or activity.
7. A client wants a very trendy Instagram/Pinterest-style home. How would you make the design look current without making it outdated in 2–3 years?
Having been in the industry since 1994, we have seen many design trends come and go. This experience helps us understand the difference between a short-term trend and a design choice that can remain relevant for years.
When a client wants a trendy Instagram or Pinterest-inspired home, we first try to understand what exactly they are attracted to — whether it is the colours, furniture, lighting, materials or overall mood.
At JN Interiors, we prefer to create a timeless foundation through good space planning, durable materials and classic finishes. Trends can then be introduced through elements that are easier to update, such as colours, cushions, artwork, décor, fabrics and lighting.
We believe a home should reflect the personality and lifestyle of the people living in it rather than simply reproduce a social-media image.
