- Tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to pursue a career in home decor and transformation?
Design is not just about making spaces look good, it’s about making them feel good too. Hi, I’m Kirti Mali, a 22-year-old interior designer with a passion for creating spaces that inspire and uplift. Since childhood, I’ve had a keen eye for design and a fascination with how spaces can impact our mood and behavior. At 18, I took on my first project, designing my own home, which sparked a journey that led me to pursue a career in interior design.
While studying, I honed my skills through freelancing, and now I’m thrilled to be working at InDesign by Fanusta in Pune. I’m driven by the desire to craft homes that not only reflect the owner’s personality but also enhance their well-being. I’m excited to collaborate with like-minded professionals, continue growing as a designer, and bring my vision to life.

- Do you have a signature style or philosophy when it comes to designing spaces?
My design philosophy revolves around creating spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. I believe in understanding the client’s needs, lifestyle, and preferences to craft a space that truly reflects their personality. While I appreciate various styles, from modern to traditional, my approach is centered around timeless design that balances elegance with practicality.
- How do you approach a new project? Walk us through your design process.
When approaching a new project, I start by understanding the client’s requirements, budget, and timeline. I conduct site analysis, take measurements, and gather information about the space. Next, I develop a concept, create mood boards, and present initial design ideas. Once the concept is approved, I proceed with creating detailed designs, selecting materials, and specifying finishes. Throughout the process, I ensure regular communication with the client to guarantee their vision is met.
To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it?
- Do you follow design trends or prefer to set your own?
While I’m aware of current design trends, I believe in creating timeless spaces that reflect the client’s personality. I incorporate trends judiciously, ensuring they align with the client’s style and preferences. My goal is to design spaces that are both beautiful and enduring.
- What’s one mistake people often make when decorating their homes and how can they fix it?
One common mistake is over-accessorizing or cluttering spaces. To fix this, I recommend editing and curating belongings, focusing on statement pieces, and incorporating negative space to create a sense of calm and visual balance.
- What’s a must-have piece that every well-designed home should include?
A must-have piece is a statement light fixture or a unique piece of art that reflects the homeowner’s personality. This adds character and visual interest to the space.

- Do you have any favorite upcycling or repurposing tricks?
I love repurposing old furniture by refinishing or reupholstering it. One trick is to transform an old door into a coffee table or headboard, adding a touch of history and character to the space.
- Where do you see yourself, and the world of interior design in five years?
In five years, I see myself owning my own interior design firm, where I can bring my passion for sustainable, technology-driven, and wellness-focused design to life. My firm will prioritize meeting clients’ unique needs while incorporating eco-friendly practices and innovative solutions. I’d be thrilled to be recognized as a top designer, potentially even gracing the cover of a prominent design magazine. The thought of leading a team of like-minded professionals and shaping the future of interior design is truly exciting.
